Commencement speeches have one of two possible outcomes: they’re either memorable or they are completely forgettable. There is no in between. Even if the speaker is on stage spewing out the world’s most sage advice, they have to do it in a way that absolutely STICKS — like David Foster Wallace did way back in 2005 — because let’s be honest, half the people sitting in that crowd have already left the building mentally or they’re waiting for you to shut the fuck up so they can go get wasted and celebrate graduation.
Someone must have tipped off Hank Azaria to this, because when he delivered his commencement address to the class of 2016 at Tufts University he opted to finish his in memorable fashion, by doling out life advice as several characters from The Simpsons. Even if people in that audience were not a fan of the show, voice actors, or receiving life advice, they will still never forget Azaria’s speech, because A) he is a famous person and B) his method of delivery was unforgettable.
