If you have ever wondered why you aren’t luckier in life, there is a good reason for that. It’s because all of the good luck in the world isn’t evenly distributed. Case in point: a South Carolina man recently purchased 162 identical tickets for a single Pick 4 lottery drawing and ended up winning $811,000.
According to South Carolina Education Lottery officials, the $811,000 winner said he had a good feeling about the numbers 1-7-3-1, so he spent $339 to play the four same numbers on 162 identical tickets.
That $811,000 windfall was the largest amount ever paid out to a single player in a South Carolina Education Lottery Pick 4 drawing. On top of that, another man at Towne Centre Market in Mount Pleasant overheard what the anonymous Lowcountry man was doing and played the same numbers, winning $25,400.
“I was excited of course,” the winner said about bucking the 1 in 10,000 odds of winning (and the even greater odds of doing it 162 times in a single drawing).
Save some luck for the rest of us
Another example of how lady luck only shares with a select few people occurred recently in Maryland. There a man stopped at Hob’s Carroll Motor Fuels in Sparrows Point to buy ice. He also had an extra $20 in his pocket so he asked the clerk for a $20 scratch-off ticket.
“I jokingly told her to pick me a winner,” the unidentified man told Maryland Lottery officials. She did.
After scratching off all the numbers when he got home, he then revealed the prize amounts underneath the winning numbers and saw a one with some zeroes.
“At first, I thought I won $100. Then I thought it was for $1,000. It kept going and going,” he said. By the time he was done scratching he had won $1 million.
Oh yeah, he also won $10,000 a few years ago from a different scratch-off lottery ticket. Some people truly have all the luck.
