Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old high school athlete in Texas, was killed after he was stabbed by a fellow teenager during a track and field championship at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas, on Wednesday, April 2. Reports indicate the stabbing occurred due to a confrontation over seating arrangements.
According to reports, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony has been arrested and charged with first degree murder over the stabbing of Metcalf. Metcalf, a senior student at Centennial High School, was attending the track meet with his brother Hunter and their father Jeff when the confrontation with Anthony unfolded.
Anthony, accusing the family of being in the wrong seats, allegedly drew a knife and attacked Jeff before stabbing Hunter in the chest. Hunter rushed to his brother’s aid but could not save him, leaving Austin to die in his arms. Austin was born two minutes before Hunter and the pair were identical twins.
Austin, a free safety for his high school’s football team that received offers from several colleges, mostly Division III schools, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“I tried to whip around as fast as I could. I looked at my brother and I’m not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him,” Hunter Metcalf told local outlet WFAA.
“They were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brother’s arms,” Jeff said. “I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was, and I was very concerned, so I had to find his brother, and we rushed to the hospital. And we prayed, and it’s God’s plan, I don’t understand it, but they weren’t able to save him. This is murder.”
Anthony is being held at Collin County Jail and no bond has been set. Despite the heinous murder of his son, Jeff says that, through God, he already forgives Karmelo Anthony.
“I already forgive this person. Already. God takes care of things. God is going to take care of me. God is going to take care of my family,” he added.
Our thoughts are with the Metcalf family during this extremely difficult time. May Austin rest in peace.
