Sir George Martin was often referred to as ‘The Fifth Beatle’ as he was so integral in the success of The Beatles after signing the band back in 1962. The Beatles auditioned for George Martin on June 6, 1962 and the audition was going pretty poorly right up to the point that Martin asked the group if there was anything they didn’t like to which George Harrison told him “I don’t like your tie.”
John Lennon and Paul McCartney fed off that energy with jokes that were so good Sir George Martin came to like them so much he felt compelled to sign them. At least that’s the story most of the world knows until now.
George Martin’s son, Giles Martin, has recently shared a video of his late father telling his granddaughter why he signed The Beatles back in 1962. A portion of the caption reads ‘Ordinary people do extraordinary things. Great decisions are made for the simplest reasons. “I figured if I like them this much other people might too.”’
Sir George Martin Telling His Granddaughter Why He Signed The Beatles In 1962
I don’t normally share anything personal but this my dad from a while back explaining to my daughter he signed the Beatles. Ordinary people do extraordinary things. Great decisions are made for the simplest reasons. “I figured if I like them this much other people might too” ❤️ pic.twitter.com/j4bf96b4zS

“They were the kind of people that you liked to be with… and if I feel this way about them, other people will feel this way about them.” …. I’ve never understood people who hate The Beatles. You can dislike their music, sure, it’s not for everyone despite being amongst the greatest in history. But hating them is odd when they are amongst the most likable figures the industry has ever known.
Music fans adore this footage. The video has picked up over a million views and counting in under 12 hours. Comments are pouring in about the candid footage from fans of The Beatles.

Love this. Your dad also signed my uncle's band, the Monograms, three years before those whippersnappers from Liverpool came along! My uncle (Rod, on the right) aged 86 and living in Canada, remembers him as a kind, charismatic guy. pic.twitter.com/ziW2B02XiB

This is just wonderful. Thank you for sharing. It was so calming, listening to him explain to your daughter why he signed a young group with obvious talent, but more importantly, innate goodness 🥺. A little moment of peace today in a world of so many moments of instability ❤️

If you haven’t watched ‘Get Back’ yet, there’s no time like the present.
