Hollywood has a rich history of making movies centered around a couple of idiots finding themselves severely out of their element, whether we’re talking about iconic duos like Cheech and Chong, Harry and Lloyd, or Wayne and Garth (as well as some slightly more forgettable ones like whatever the guys in Dude, Where’s My Car? were named).
When it comes to films that define the genre of knowingly dumb comedies, it’s impossible not to mention Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, a classic in the stoner movie canon (despite the fact that it’s main characters never actually smoke weed). It’s been almost thirty years since the film first hit theaters, and while you’d think the ship might have sailed by now, the film’s creators have announced a third Bill and Ted movie is officially in the works.
Writer Ed Solomon revealed his ideas for a potential follow-up to 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey a few months ago and Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter helped amp up production at the rumor mill when they reunited for a photo in a phone booth in March. Now, The Hollywood Reporter says the third movie in the series— titled Bill & Ted Face The Music— officially has the green light, and while no real details have been released regarding its production timeline, we were blessed with a synopsis:
Bill & Ted Face the Music will see the duo long past their days as time-traveling teenagers and now weighed down by middle age and the responsibilities of family. They’ve written thousands of tunes, but they have yet to write a good one, much less the greatest song ever written. With the fabric of time and space tearing around them, a visitor from the future warns our heroes that only their song can save life as we know it.
Out of luck and fresh out of inspiration, Bill and Ted set out on a time travel adventure to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe as we know it. Together with the aid of their daughters, a new crop of historical figures, and some sympathetic music legends, they find much, much more than just a song.
Over the past few years, a number of sequels to classic comedies have attempted to recapture the spirit of the first one after a decade, but movies like Zoolander 2 and the Dumb and Dumber sequel have only served to tarnish the reputation of the original.
With that said, I’m holding out hope that this will be excellent.
