Over the last week, you’ve likely heard the name Tony Hinchcliffe more than you ever have before following his racist comments about Puerto Rico at Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden.
While speaking at the rally, the 40-year-old Tony Hinchcliffe made a slew of racist remarks about Latinos (and specifically Puerto Ricans), Black people, Jewish people, Palestinians, and members of the LGBTQ community.
Hinchcliffe’s comments about Puerto Rico — he called it a “floating island of garbage,” in addition to saying things about Latinos “loving to make babies” and Black people “carving watermelons” — caught fire and largely dominated news headlines earlier this week, giving Hinchcliffe more notoriety than he’s ever had before.
Prior to being most recognized for hurling racist comments at a Trump rally, Hinchcliffe was known for his comedy tour “Kill Tony.” Kill Tony has a bizarre premise, as it consists of largely amateur comedians doing one-minute-long sets, which is then followed by Hinchcliffe and his pals — a rotating set of comedians and internet celebrities — then roasting those comedians.
A few years back, beloved stand-up comedian Bill Burr attended a Kill Tony show and was immediately disgusted by the concept, leading to him, in typical Burr fashion, ripping the show while sitting on its stage and to its host’s face.
“He was sh—— on him, he thought it would work, it didn’t work. This is f—— brutal. Is this going to be an hour of this? I don’t want to do this to people. It’s f—— horrible. Nobody can be funny in a f—— minute. It’s stupid. Ahhhh, f— this. Dude, don’t even… f— this. This is stupid. There’s one more, and then I’m out,” Burr says in the clip, which was uploaded to YouTube in November 2023 and has resurfaced in the wake of Hinchcliffe’s controversial jokes.
When Hinchcliffe then tries to turn the blame on the contestant rather than the contest itself by claiming he did “so bad” that Burr is leaving, Burr didn’t let that slide either, saying “If there’s a negative lining, Tony will find it — there it is! Right between the ray of sunshine. There’s that little nugget of negativity you f—— c—.”
This won’t be the last you hear from Burr in the coming weeks as it was announced on Halloween that he will be hosting the first post-election Saturday Night Live episode on Saturday, November 9. Burr previously hosted SNL for the first time in 2020.
