Anyone who’s watched their fair share of horror movies or films about an apocalyptic event is likely familiar with the tried and true trope of teasing what’s in store with the help of a news bulletin or radio broadcast about a “mysterious” or “unexplained” event that most characters pay little or no attention to.
If I’ve learned anything from those movies, it’s that birds tend to know when some gnarly stuff is about to go down. As a result, it’s fairly hard not to be somewhat unnerved by real-life incidents involving winged creatures acting strangely, like the bonkers scene that unfolded when hundreds of them were filmed smashing into the NASCAR Hall of Fame a couple of weeks before Halloween in 2019.
Now, we’ve been treated to another “Nope! Moment” courtesy of footage that recently surfaced out of Mexico. According to The Guardian, a security camera captured hundreds of yellow-headed blackbirds suddenly plummeting to the ground in a town in Chihuahua on the morning of February 7th, which result in the death of dozens of members of the flock.

It’s not entirely clear what preceded the bizarre moment; there’s some speculation the birds inhaled toxic fumes or fell from a nearby powerline that collapsed under their weight, while another expert has suggested they were attempting to evade a larger avian predator (like a hawk) only for the ground to get in the way.
While we may never have a definitive answer, at least we can take solace in knowing this was an isolated incident and not one that unfolded just a few days before HUNDREDS OF STARLINGS WERE SEEN RAINING DOWN FROM THE SKY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.
Lucky us.
