You’ve probably heard a lot about the lottery recently. That’s because earlier in the week, the second-highest-ever jackpot was claimed—a prize pool that amounted to $1.787 billion.
Two tickets, sold in Missouri and Texas, matched all the winning lottery numbers, meaning that the winners will split the massive jackpot. Still, all this discussion around the lottery left many wondering: How can I become a winner?
There’s no real answer to this question, but that hasn’t stopped people from trying to game the system. For example, one lottery winner bought 162 identical lottery tickets. Another won a jackpot by strategically buying every possible number combination.
Now, a user on TikTok has the internet talking with another theory for winning the lottery: asking ChatGPT.
Will ChatGPT Help You Win The Lottery?
In her video, TikTok user Ariel (@ariellab04) explains how she and her boyfriend “won $11 for the Powerball.”
“My boyfriend asked ChatGPT what would be the winning numbers, and they gave him three of the numbers yesterday,” Ariel reveals.
While Ariel won two numbers using her family’s birthdays and similar, meaningful numbers, her boyfriend’s use of ChatGPT—and the resultant winning numbers—has her considering a different strategy.
“I might try that again,” she says of using meaningful numbers, “but I’m definitely going to ChatGPT it.”
Can ChatGPT Really Give You Winning Lottery Numbers?
If you ask ChatGPT for the winning lottery numbers, it will not give them to you.
Instead, the Large Language Model will tell you how you can “strategically” pick numbers in order to avoid common ones (and thus avoid a shared prize pool in the event that you win). It will also offer to share information on which games have the best odds and, if desired, provide a set of random numbers.
While it’s possible that this could result in the app providing some winning numbers, this is entirely down to chance. Large language models like ChatGPT only work based on the information they have available to them. As the future lottery numbers are determined entirely by chance, there is no possible way that ChatGPT would have access to this information.
If one wants to pick their lottery numbers using ChatGPT, it is effectively no different than having them randomly assigned.

Commenters Say They’ve Done The Same
Ariel wouldn’t be the first to use ChatGPT to play the lottery and score some wins. Back in 2023, a Thai internet user claimed that utilizing the service allowed him to win THB2,000, or around $59 USD.
Stories like these may be why several commenters under Ariel’s video seemed eager to test out this theory.
“I use WhatsApp’s ai and I won 7 dollars,” said a user.
“I asked chatgpt but it said I can not give you that information,” countered another.
“the amount of people who probably did the same but don’t realize no AI can predict what a random number is going to be since well it’s random,” shared a third. “Also the amount of people who probably got the same numbers from AI so y’all going to share the pot with thousands of people if that was the case would be crazy too.”
