In 2016, radio stations and streaming platforms introduced global music fans to something called “The Record Company.” Initially we were like, “Ok, great, why are you talking about a record company? Shut up and play the Foo Fighters or Lil Wayne or whatever.”

But then, the thumping, distorted rock beats funked through our headphones or speakers and we were like, “OK, you got our attention. So what band from this record company are we listening to?” And finally, we got it. This wasn’t a record company. It was a band that was called The Record Company.

Then, just like Misery has made America its bitch in 2020 – The Record Company made 2016 its bitch. The band’s debut album Give It Back to You became one of those records that really doesn’t have a bad song and spawned three Top 10 hits. One song off the record – the smash single “Off the Ground” – could literally be heard pretty much anywhere at any time, from radio to streaming to parties and high school football games, live shows and even TV commercials.

Founded in 2011 and based in Los Angeles, The Record Company includes Marc Cazorla on drums, Alex Stiff on bass, and is fronted by our latest guest on The Load Out Podcast – the remarkably talented singer-songwriter and guitarist Chris Vos.

Vos and I spent about 45 minutes walking through his experiences growing up on a diary farm and cutting his teeth playing in local bars Wisconsin, his eventual move to Los Angeles where he’d meet his two bandmates and wife, handling the instant fame that comes with a smash record, and following it up with a string of critically acclaimed music after Give It Back To You made its mark.

So strap on some headphones and enjoy hearing from a guy who’s music has been compared to John Lee Hooker, the Rolling Stones, and The Stooges – which does not suck – while sharing stages with a diverse range of acts including John Mayer, the Zac Brown Band, My Morning Jacket, Nathaniel Rateliff, Bob Seger, B.B. King, Social Distortion, Buddy Guy, Grace Potter, Trombone Shorty, Blackberry Smoke, Mavis Staples and more.

Enjoy!
