People Are Freaking Out Over These Contact Lenses With A Computer Built Into Them

If the future frightens you, then you might want to stop reading. Because what I am about to tell you is literally something you might see in an episode of Black Mirror.

Still here? Okay… you were warned.

It would seem that some University of Washington engineers been able to take technology to the next level and have created contact lenses with computers built into them.

Of course, and rightfully so in my opinion, people are freaking out about them.

I mean, the article on the University of Washington’s College of Engineering web site is titled, “Contact Lenses for Superhuman Vision.” If that’s not straight out of Black Mirror I don’t know what is.

Heck, just look at how the article begins…

“Movie characters from the Terminator to the Bionic Woman use bionic eyes to zoom in on far-off scenes, have useful facts pop into their field of view, or create virtual crosshairs. Off the screen, virtual displays have been proposed for more practical purposes—visual aids to help vision-impaired people, holographic driving control panels and even as a way to surf the Web on the go.”

Nope. Not at all creepy.

“People may find all sorts of applications for it that we have not thought about. Our goal is to demonstrate the basic technology and make sure it works and that it’s safe,” said Babak Parviz, a UW assistant professor of electrical engineering, who heads a group that is developing electronics for contact lenses.
