‘I’d Turn Around And Leave’: Michigan Man Changes The Video Doorbell Sound At His House. Then He Plays It

The internet has made many unexpected songs go viral.

From Hudson Mohawke’s squeaky trap banger “CBAT” causing a stir after allegedly being included in a Reddit user’s personal playlist to netizens’ years-long search to find a song featured in a film, people on the internet are used to the idea that, sometimes, your next viral hit comes from the strangest of places.

Inevitably, hits like these leave the internet and find a place in the real world. Sometimes, this can be positive. For instance, the band Pachinko got back together and released two albums after the viral discovery of one of their CDs in a thrift store. Other times, the results can simply be funny, as recently shared in a viral video from TikTok user @mr_ruffi0.

What’s Unique About This Video Doorbell?

In a video with over 600,000 views, the TikToker shows off his Ubiquiti Networks G4 Doorbell Pro. After pressing the ringer, an oddly familiar song plays.

“Updated the ringer on my #doorbell #holdmusic,” he writes in the video’s caption.

If the sound alone wasn’t enough to trigger a memory in viewers’ minds, the hashtag “holdmusic” should give those watching a hint as to what’s going on here.

The song being played on the doorbell is called “Opus Number One.” And it was composed by Tim Carleton and Darrick Deel.

According to an archived blog post on Cisco’s website, the duo composed the song when they were both in high school. Years later, Deel took up a job at Cisco. There, he was involved in the team making systems for VoIP calling. Knowing that the team needed hold music, he offered the song. And now, his story and song have been featured everywhere from “This American Life” to advertisements during the Super Bowl. The song is also available for streaming on YouTube and most other streaming platforms.

How Can You Change The Ringer On Your Doorbell?

Depending on the video doorbell one is using, it may be possible to change the ringer or chime on their doorbell.

In the TikToker’s case, it is possible to change the doorbell’s chime in the settings of the Ubiquiti Networks G4 Doorbell Pro. Though, changing the chime heard by those pressing the button on the doorbell appears to be a little more difficult, even if it is technically possible.

However, for other video doorbells, such as Amazon’s Ring doorbell, changing the chime sound ranges from difficult to impossible. For example, Amazon’s Ring doorbell does not allow one to change the sound that the doorbell makes, much to the chagrin of internet users.

Commenters Can’t Believe It

In the comments section, users shared their memories with the song. Many said that, though they may enjoy the track, its association with long hold times has made listening to it a troublesome experience.

“If I press your doorbell and it does this, I’m just going home,” wrote a user.

“My (ex) husband was in the ICU for a week during covid. This was the hold music while I waited to talk to the nurse 3 times a day,” recalled another. “Little ptsd for me.”

“Me outside your door: ‘REP-RE-SENT-A-TIVE!!!’” joked a further TikToker.
