‘Star Wars’ Fans React To, Revel In The Long-Awaited Firing Of Gina Carano

After comparing being a Republican in the 2021 United States to being a Jewish person in 1930s Nazi Germany, The Mandalorian actress and former UFC star Gina Carano has been fired by Lucasfilm and will no longer play Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune in the acclaimed Disney+ series. Carano has also been dropped by her talent agency UTA.

In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, a rep for Lucasfilm called Carano’s recent comments “abhorrent and unacceptable” and confirmed that Carano is no longer employed by the iconic entertainment company.

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” a Lucasfilm representative said in a Wednesday statement. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Not only was Carano in line to continue to feature in The Mandalorian, but she was also set to star in the upcoming Disney+ series Rangers of the New Republic. At this time, it is unclear if the Cara Dune character will be recast or simply written out of the Star Wars universe.

Carano’s comments about Nazi Germany weren’t her first offensive social media posts — in fact, fans have been calling for her firing for some time, as she’s routinely shared conspiracy theories on her social media, including posts that mocked wearing masks during the pandemic, making fun of people who share their pronouns on their social media pages, and has also falsely claimed unproven voter fraud affected the results of the 2020 Presidential Election.

At this time, the Gina Carano-less (!) third season of The Mandalorian is set to begin production this Spring ahead of its early 2022 release date. As for where Carano goes from here, wherever it is, hopefully, it was worth losing a role on television’s most successful series because she simply could not keep her opinions to herself.
