Hard-boiled eggs are easy to make in theory, but they often elude even experienced cooks. Green yolks, runny yolks, and too-hard whites are common mistakes made by cooking them too long or not long enough. But the hardest part about making perfect hard-boiled eggs is getting the shell to peel off easily. Most people who’ve been tasked with bringing deviled eggs to the cookout are very familiar with this frustration.

A woman on a break from doing yard work may have just solved your hard-boiled egg peeling woes for good.

Amy (@thegertlife) reveals her hard-boiled egg hack in a TikTok that is spreading across the platform like wildfire. In the few days since she made the post, it’s accrued over 2 million views.

In the TikTok, Amy says she decided to make a Cobb salad to eat later, so she came inside to hard-boil some eggs.

“Want your hard-boiled eggs to come out of this shell perfectly every time?” she says, peeling an egg perfectly in about a second. “Just like that. Follow these simple directions.”

The Elusive Perfect Peel

The internet is rife with advice on how to make hard-boiled eggs so that the shell comes off cleanly and easily, as Amy demonstrates.

Various tips include using older eggs, boiling the water first, putting the eggs in an ice bath, steaming them, simmering them, and even baking them.

There’s even advice on how you should peel them.

Amy’s trick is a novel one.

“I take the back of a spoon to the bottom of my egg, and I tap very lightly,” she says, tapping on the egg. “Did you hear that snap? When you hear that snap, the egg is ready to be hard-boiled.”

She demonstrates on several more eggs. Each time Amy taps lightly on the wider end of a raw egg until you hear a snap.

“When you hear that snap, the membrane on the inside breaks loose,” she explains. “So that after you hard-boil them, the shells peel off very easily. There’s no sticking to the egg.”

Like many, Amy transfers the boiled eggs into an ice bath when they’re done. This may or may not impact their peelability, though many believe it does.

After they’ve cooled, she peels one on camera. Sure enough, no shell sticks to the egg, and it comes off quickly and cleanly.

Deviled Eggs For All

Judging by the responses to Amy’s TikTok, she’s single-handedly changed the lives of thousands of fans of hard-boiled eggs.

One joked, “If this works for real I’m adding you to my life insurance policy.”

Another agreed that if it works, Amy is “my friend forever.”

“You may have just started another egg shortage,” a third wrote.

One woman even said she may have never married her ex if she’d known this trick. “I stayed with my now ex husband longer than I should have because he knew how to boil eggs,” she wrote.

Amy has been taken aback by the response to her post.

In the comments, she shared, “I didn’t expect this video to get views and I literally stopped working in the yard to put these eggs on to boil.”

The internet is glad she did.
