James Cameron Fires Hilarious Unprovoked Shot At ‘Stranger Things’

After spending the majority of my first three years at BroBible ragging on James Cameron’s aggressive pompousness, I’ve recently seen the light and have come all away around when it comes to my opinion of the acclaimed director.

What I’ve come to realize, and appreciate, about Cameron is how much he’s A) unabashedly himself and B) how much he then *believes* in himself. After all, that’s likely how he got Disney to fork over the biggest movie budget of all time, as The Way of Water reportedly cost around $350 million.

Cameron certainly hasn’t been shy about his confidence in the project, though, as he’s managed to say something hilariously quote-worthy in virtually every interview he’s given.

Take this recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, for example, where the 68-year-old Titanic director took an unprovoked shot at Netflix’s Stranger Things, particularly the awkwardness that comes with the actors aging. To his credit, though, he did caveat his comments by claiming he “loves” Stranger Things.

Trinity Jo-Li Bliss was about 7 when she was cast as Tuk in the sequel and is now 13, while 18-year-old Jack Champion, who plays Spider, was 12 and “growing like a weed,” Cameron recalls to EW in a recent feature story. For that reason, the second and third films, as well as the first act of the fourth, had to be done in one production.

“Otherwise, you get — and I love Stranger Things — but you get the Stranger Things effect where they’re supposed to still be in high school [but] they look like they’re 27,” Cameron says. “You know, I love the show. It’s okay, we’ll suspend disbelief. We like the characters, but, you know.” [via Entertainment Weekly]

Avatar: The Way of Water — which stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Sigourney Weaver, Edie Falco, Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Cowell, Cliff Curtis, Oona Chaplin, CJ Jones, and more — is currently playing in theaters.

According to reports, the film made $135 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, which is about the same as The Batman made back in March.
