In 2010, Jackie Chan and (a pre-that Jaden Smith) Jaden Smith teamed up for a Karate Kid reboot that nobody asked for. It wasn’t necessarily a bad movie by any means, but it failed to capture the spirit of the original, which was released in 1984 and featured Ralph Macchio facing off against the laughably evil Cobra Kai karate studio in a battle to see who was the best around.
In an interview in 2011, Macchio said that he had no interest in ever doing anything related to The Karate Kid, but it would appear that he’s since changed his mind. It was just revealed that Macchio will revive his role as Daniel LaRusso in a series for YouTube Red alongside William Zabka, who portrayed the bully Johnny Lawrence, who is basically the closest thing the 1980s had to Jake Paul.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is a comedy— which makes us slightly skeptical— that follows a down-on-his luck Lawrence trying to get back on his feet by reopening the Cobra Kai dojo and reigniting his rivalry with Daniel-san (who is dealing with the loss of Mr. Miyagi) in the process.
There’s currently no premiere date set for the show, but it can’t come soon enough as far as we’re concerned.
