It’s safe to say that people who eat fast food aren’t really expecting a Michelin Star-level meal. After all, it’s called “fast” food for a reason.

Still, there’s at least some level of expectations that come with the comfort food Americans have come to love. Making sure it’s hot, for instance, or at least lacking any sort of foreign object inside (the latter has, for some reason, been difficult for many joints).

But how much do we really know about how American fast food is made? One KFC worker gave customers a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes at the restaurant. They shocked viewers by revealing how the mashed potatoes are made.

How Are The Mashed Potatoes At KFC Really Made?

TikToker @babyc5802 often shares videos of behind-the-scenes at Taco Bell, showing how tacos or the Mexican Pizza are made. Their latest clip, which earned over 1.2 million views, takes viewers to a new setting: KFC.

“Making KFC’s mashed potatoes,” the TikToker writes in the text overlay. In the clip, the worker fills a pitcher with hot water from a dispenser. They then pour it into a pan filled with “potato mix.”

“Stir until thickened,” the instruction on the screen reads, as the worker diligently stirs the mix with a whisk. They continue to mix the several globs of potato mix until the entire mixture turns into the smooth side dish we all love.

“Voilà,” the text reads. The TikToker gives a thumbs up as the video comes to a close.

Viewers Are Flabbergasted

Unsurprisingly, the fact that the mashed potatoes involved no peeling, frozen potatoes, or any type of potato at all shocked viewers.

“Is fresh food illegal in the U.S?” a top comment read, while another couldn’t believe they were “fake.” Others shared how mistaken their assumptions were, like one who commented, “I thought yall boiled the potatoes.”

Some viewers found these folks naive, with one writing, “People expect real food from a fast food?”

At least one user shared an explanation for the way KFC mashed potatoes were prepped: “Does no one in the comments know what dehydrated food is? Hikers, army rations, and even food preppers dehydrated and eat their food all the time. Just add water to rehydrate it.”

Are KFC’s Mashed Potatoes Dehydrated Food?

It’s true; KFC uses instant potato mix where the water is removed from the potatoes that have been boiled and mashed. The process was explained in a 2022 article from the Times of India after another TikToker went viral for exposing the process. Because of this, however, the instant mashed potatoes have to contain more additives, but the “flavor is usually about the same as fresh.”
