Not only is a sequel to 2019’s billion-dollar-grossing and Oscar-winning Joker in the works, but the film has cast none other than Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
On Tuesday night, director Todd Phillips shared the first image of Gaga (and Joaquin Phoenix, for that matter) from the movie and fans were loving it.

While nothing about the plot has been officially confirmed, past reports have indicated that the film will be a musical and will be set primarily in Arkham Asylum, which is where Phoenix’s Joker will meet and seduce Gaga’s Harley Quinn.
Titled Joker: Folie à Deux, the film is currently in production and will hit theaters on October 4, 2024. In addition to Phoenix — who won the Academy Award for Best Actor when he played Gotham’s Clown Prince of Crime back in 2019 — Joker: Folie à Deux also stars Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey.
Released in 2019, the original Joker went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made as it earned over $1 billion at the global box office (against just a $60 million budget). The film was also nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won two: Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir.
As detailed by new DC Studios CEO James Gunn in late January, films such as Joker: Folie à Deux and The Batman franchise will be “DC Elseworlds” stories that exist outside the main franchise continuity that Gunn has been tasked with establishing in the coming years.
