When everything is said and done, I don’t think people will remember much about the 90th Academy Awards, which were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night. Kimmel was a perfectly adequate host, but his most memorable comedic moment of the night was giving away a jet ski to whoever gave the shortest speech during the ceremony, which tells you basically everything you need to know.
The show seemed to favor straightforward jokes and excessively long montages in favor of more elaborate song-and-dance routines, but The Lonely Island revealed they’d pitched a bit that fit into that category to the Academy that was never filmed because “financially and logistically impossible.” The trio of Andy Samberg, and Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer released a barebones video of the song on YouTube, and it’s pretty easy to see why it never came to fruition.
I can only imagine the effort (and money) involved in getting the biggest names in the superhero movie game (in addition to every famous Chris in Hollywood) to take part in a self-deprecating video, but I’m glad we got to at least see a low-budget version.
I give a lot of credit to the guys in the group for swallowing their pride and agreeing to work with the Academy after they failed to get a single nomination for Best Original Song for any of the tracks in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping at last year’s awards. I love La La Land more than I should probably admit but if you think “City of Stars” can hold a candle to the song about fucking Bin Laden then you probably weren’t born with ears.
