The Golden Age of Television seems to have officially come to an end with the impressively underwhelming conclusion of Game of Thrones but there’s one particular genre that’s currently having one hell of a run: true crime documentaries.
It’s been five years since Making a Murderer became an absolute sensation, and since then, virtually everyone has jumped on the bandwagon to quench the thirst of a viewing audience with an insatiable lust for real-life crime sagas containing more twists than a 1950s high school dance.
A couple of weeks ago, we were treated to what can only be described as a true crime epic in the form of Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, a seven-part limited series revolving around the aptly named Joe Exotic and a number of equally eccentric people who were caught up in the surreal series of events that resulted in him being sent to prison for trying to have someone killed.
The someone in question is Carole Baskin, an animal rights activist who became Exotic’s mortal enemy after she attempted to shut down his private zoo in Oklahoma. When I first started watching, I couldn’t help but think there was something slightly off about her before my suspicions were confirmed when a number of people said they believe she fed her ex-husband to the tigers that she owns.
Baskin has obviously denied those accusations but the law enforcement officials in charge of the cold case recently asked people for tips and received at least six leads concerning the totally innocent woman who refuses to take a polygraph.
If you happen to be a fan of documentaries featuring someone who denies killing their spouse despite there being enough evidence to convince a sizeable chunk of the population they’re guilty, I’d recommend you check out O.J.: Made in America, the 30 For 30 examining the case of O.J. Simpson, who may or may not have killed two people but who officially shoved a knife into the heart of irony thanks to a recent video he posted on Twitter.
On Wednesday, The Juice took a minute to share his thoughts on Tiger King, and while he doesn’t explicitly mention Carole by name, it seems pretty clear he buys into the theory that she had a hand in the disappearance of her ex.
