If you have ever wondered how many oysters can be eaten in a day, we may soon have that answer. An influencer who goes by @thehippiemeathead is undertaking an oyster eating challenge where he started with eating 1 oyster and doubles his intake each day at exponential growth.
The first few days were easy. He ate 1, 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 and the things started to heat up. By Day 8 he was eating 128 oysters. Day 9 he had to eat 256 oysters.
According to @thehippiemeathead, he will continue with his oyster eating challenge until he either succumbs to zinc poisoning or goes broke. Though, it seems as if he might have found a mysterious benefactor to help him with the cost of oysters as the Philly-based influencer was seen wearing a Fishtown Seafood market shirt on Day 8, a seafood shop in Philly.
The Ultimate Oyster Eating Challenge
I have always believed in my ability to eat oysters. Never have I struggled taking down 6 dozen bivalves with ease, each on top of a cracker topped with cocktail sauce and horseradish.
Eating more than 72 oysters is rarely an option because frankly, they’re expensive, and 6 dozen is plenty. But I have been curious as to what my personal limits are. And seeing this guy double his oyster intake daily for the oyster eating challenge has me wondering…
Here is Day 8, 128 oysters:
@thehippiemeathead Day 8 of the Oyster Challenge: 128 oysters, self-shucked, and sent down the hatch via beer funnel. This is either peak testosterone… or the final chapter of my autobiography #HippieMeathead #KeepltReal #OysterChallenge #Oyster #Health #HealthFood #SuperFood #TestBooster #KeepShucking
Where does this all end?
He has said that he will stop the oyster eating challenge from either zinc poisoning or going broke.
An average oyster has 5.5mg of zinc. The recommended daily dosage for humans is 8-11mg. Two oysters along meets your total daily requirement, according to Gothenburg Health.
The upper limit for humans is 40mg a day, or about 7.3 oysters. Presumably, the zinc poisoning is coming any day at the rate he is going, or so you would think.
The competitive eating record for oysters was set by Sonya Thomas in 2012. At the Acme Oyster House in New Orleans, ‘The Black Widow’ ate 47 dozen acme oysters in 8 minutes. Thatis 564 oysters in 480 seconds.
So there is precedent for oyster eating records.
I would think he will reach a point this week where eating any more oysters is simply revolting to him. His body will tell him enough is enough and he won’t be able to stomach another. But only time will tell.
Choosing free will
On TikTok, commenters are supporting his oyster eating challenge. The top comment on his Day 9 video was from u/linds who wrote “interesting choice of free will, respect.”
Others have commented on his eating style. User ‘thanks bro’ wrote “oyster bong was something I never thought I’d see, good job.” I’d second that. Never did I imagine he would pour them in a beer funnel.
