Irma was downgraded from a hurricane to tropical storm Monday, but not before robbing 5.8 million Floridians of their power and taking the lived of at least 42 people in Florida and the Caribbean. Florida was ravaged by 130 mph winds, strong storm surges, and torrential downpours that led to cartoonish flooding. The National Weather Service reported Monday that flooding from a storm surge in Jacksonville had exceeded a record set by Hurricane Dora in 1964.

One thing that never fails to make me laugh during these natural disasters is the weather reporters urging everyone not to go outside and then playing hero. I don’t know if there’s incentives in their contracts that encourage throwing themselves at the mercy of mother nature, but it sure is a sight to see.
