  • Sean Penn has arrived in Ukraine to make a documentary about Russia’s invasion.
  • The 61-year-old Oscar winner has already met with deputy prime minister Iryna Vereshchuk, local journalists, and members of the Ukrainian military.
  • Our country is grateful to him for such a show of courage and honesty,” the Ukrainian government said in a statement.

Academy Award-winning actor Sean Penn is currently on the ground in Ukraine making a documentary about Russia’s invasion, according to reports.

Penn, who has become an increasingly political figure in recent years, reportedly appeared at a press briefing on Thursday in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv to listen to government officials speak about the crisis.

Since his arrival in Ukraine, Penn has also visited the Office of the President and has met with deputy prime minister Iryna Vereshchuk, local journalists, and members of the Ukrainian military.

“The director specially came to Kyiv to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country. Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine in Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to him for such a show of courage and honesty,” the Ukrainian government said in an official statement about Penn’s arrival.

The statement from Ukraine’s government also hails Penn’s bravery, which is something they say that “Western politicians” have been lacking as this crisis has escalated:

“Sean Penn is demonstrating bravery that many others have been lacking, in particular some Western politicians. The more people like that — true friends of Ukraine, who support the fight for freedom — the quicker we can stop this heinous invasion by Russia.”

This certainly isn’t the first time that Penn has partaken in a high-profile piece of journalism, as he famously interviewed Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán back in 2016.
