On Tuesday, Disney CEO Bob Iger conducted the company’s quarterly earnings call with various members of the media, and in doing so, gave fans a much clearer idea of what the future holds for the galaxy far, far away.
Speaking to reporters, Iger — who confirmed that season two of the wildly successful debut series the Mandalorian will hit Disney+ in October — emphasized that “the priority” when it comes to Star Wars over the next few years will be television.
Additionally, Iger hinted that Star Wars could be taking a page out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe playbook by “infusing The Mandalorian with more characters and taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series.”
The hit Disney Plus series may introduce new heroes and villains who will star in their own spinoff shows, Walt Disney Company chairman Bob Iger told investors on Tuesday shortly after the company presented quarterly earnings.
The future of “Star Wars,” the space opera saga that Disney bought the rights to in 2012 when it purchased Lucasfilm for $4 billion, will be on the small screen. The release of “The Rise of Skywalker” last December ended the nine-film series about the Skywalker clan. It also led Disney to, Iger said, “take a bit of a hiatus in terms of theatrical releases.” The company believed it had over-saturated the market for “Star Wars” sequels and spinoffs — “The Rise of Skywalker” was the lowest-grossing of the three most recent installments and 2018’s “Solo” lost money. The Mandalorian isn’t the only original live-action Star Wars series on the horizon, as series focused on Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi and Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor — who first debuted in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story — are also in the works. At this time, it appears that the Obi-Wan show will be the next in the pipeline despite the reported issues with the script.
