The internet is overflowing with handy tricks and tips concerning unconventional uses for everyday products, and while I can’t say I’ve ever thought about putting a roll of toilet paper in my fridge, I’ve apparently been doing something wrong based on a piece of advice that’s gone viral.
I’m not necessarily proud to admit I’ve deployed toilet paper in the kitchen on multiple occasions after realizing I’ve run out of paper towels, and while I could attempt to position that as a “life hack,” I think “a fairly pathetic act of desperation” would be a slightly more appropriate label.
I have to say I’d probably have some questions if I opened up someone else’s fridge and discovered a roll of toilet paper inside, but with that said, it can supposedly serve a pretty practical purpose based on what some housekeeping experts have to say.
This piece of information comes courtesy of a TikTok video that’s recently made the rounds after being posted earlier this year that asserts a roll of toilet paper is a cheap way to absorb excess moisture in your refrigerator while preventing unwanted odors from seeping into food (it should be swapped out every few weeks).
@smartfoxlifehacks Have you ever tried THIS? 😱🦊 #tipsandtricks #lifehack #kitchenhacks
Plenty of people deploy a box of baking soda for the same purpose, although that will typically set you back a little bit more than a lone roll of TP (with that said, another person suggests a hybrid approach that involves applying a paste made of water and the substance officially known as “sodium bicarbonate” to the top of the toilet paper).
Now, you’re not going to become rich with the money you might potentially save by opting for toilet paper over some Arm & Hammer, and when you consider a roll is going to take up a bit more space (and probably lead to more questions from guests), this tactic might not be for everyone.
With that said, you do you.
