The Golden Globes took place on Sunday night. If you’re like me and have trouble keeping track of which awards show is which, the Golden Globes is the one ran by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and all of the actors (like Tom Hanks), celebrities, directors, etc. sit at the big circular tables and get drunk in a much more casual setting than the other awards shows.
The Golden Globes is also the awards show that’s been hosted by Ricky Gervais in recent years where he continued to roast the chestnuts out of Hollywood’s fragile egos. You can check out his phenomenal opening monologue here where he called out Apple’s sweatshops and made an ‘Epstein didn’t commit suicide’ joke.
While Ricky Gervais was summing up the shit show of 2019 in his opening monologue the camera panned over to Tom Hanks after a joke about Felicity Huffman making license plates (in prison for the college bribery scandal). Tom Hanks’ reaction to the joke is being called the first great meme of 2020.
It’s still the first week of 2020 so it’s not like this Tom Hanks meme has a ton of competition (so far) but it is a pretty solid reaction meme. One that’s eerily similar to that smug kid reaction pic (below) that’s been around for a few years.
