For those keeping score at home, we haven’t had a new BMW 8 Series in 20 years. Well, based on the new addition to the BMW 8 Series, it was well worth the wait. The M850i xDrive is a glorious automobile that not only deserves to be named to BMW’s premium lineup, but also is worthy of being in the discussion as one of the greatest luxury super coupes of all-time.
Get ready to go grand touring because the 2019 BMW 8 Series Coupe is ready to go and take you there in supreme comfort and luxury. The former concept car (see earlier photos of the M8 Gran Coupe) is now a reality and the first model to be unveiled in the 8 Series’ lineup is the M850i xDrive. This incredible car offers a bevy of high-tech features such as a head-up display, parking assistant with reversing assist, and Digital Key that will allow owners to startup, lock or unlock their car via their smartphone instead of a traditional key. The vehicle’s Live Cockpit Professional system will allow the infotainment system to work with your smartphone for a more personalized experience.
The M850i offers Merino leather seats that can be upgraded to BMW’s new climate seats, which channel cold air from anywhere in the cabin to the built-in fans in the backrests and seat cushions. The BMW 8 Series Coupe comes standard with an 11-speaker stereo system, but can be upgraded to a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound audio system, or a top-of-the-line 1375-watt Bowers & Wilkins Diamond speaker system.
There is Adaptive M Suspension, collision detection and driving assistance systems including one with the ability to correct your driving line if you are driving sloppily. The new BMW boasts full-LED headlights and tail lights with LaserLight tech. This luxury grand tourer has 19-inch alloy wheels or you can go with the M Performance model that will have 20-inch wheels, performance tires, and upgraded brakes.
Under the hood of the M850i xDrive Coupe M Performance is a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. It has eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic gearbox and the transmission is GPS-aided for predicting gear changes. Though the previous model was a V12, the M850i actually has more power than its predecessor. This German-engineering wonder will zoom from 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 155 that is electronically limited. Not too shabby for a four-seater that has adequate trunk space. BMW did not release the price of this beauty, but expect it to be in the low $100,000’s when it goes on sale in the fall of 2018.
