Everybody can’t wait to get their hands on a powerful new American muscle car. Especially car thieves. The latest most-stolen car list is out and if you own a Dodge Charger or Challenger you’re going to want to sleep in your car tonight to make sure it doesn’t get stolen.

Using data from insurance claims, the Highway Loss Data Institute released their latest list for the most and least stolen cars in the United States.

The HLDI, which is an arm of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, found that car thieves want your Dodge Charger HEMI and Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, the American muscle cars topped the list as the most stolen vehicles. The Dodge Charger HEMI is stolen 5.4 times more often than the average vehicle according to the study.

The regular Dodge Challenger was the sixth-most stolen car of model years between 2016-2018.

The Infiniti QX50 4-door and the Infiniti QX80 were in high demand by thieves as they were third and fourth on the list. Coming in fifth was the GMC Sierra 1500 crew-cab.

Of the least stolen vehicles, the BMW 3-series four-door tops the list and is approximately 25 times less likely to be stolen than other new vehicles.

Then the Tesla Model S four-wheel-drive and Tesla Model X four-wheel-drive are the second and third-least stolen cars. The thought is that these electric vehicles are usually in the garage charging at night and not parked out on the street for robbers to snatch.

The Chevrolet Equinox four-wheel-drive and Buick Encore four-wheel-drive round out the top five least stolen cars for 2019.

The HLDI study simply takes the most stolen cars models between 2016 and 2018. They do not factor in vehicle sales and how many cars are actually available to be pilfered.

“These are all expensive vehicles, which makes sense,” said Matt Moore, senior vice president of HLDI. “If you’re going to steal a vehicle – if you’re going to commit a crime – you’re likely going to want to profit from that crime.”
