There are only so many hop puns available, so eventually breweries have to actually get creative naming their beers. Take Westheim Brewery for example, they named their new brew “Fucking Awesome Premium Pilsner.” No word yet on if the taste matches the name.
Fucking Awesome comes from Westheim Brewery in Germany and is technically named after the city of Fucking in Austria. This isn’t a new trend. Just think of all the breweries in the United States that name beers after cities in Canada: Saskatchewan Rules Saison from Dogfish Head, Manitoba Is OK Ale from Rogue, and who could forget Windsor Is Basically Ours Wheat from Detroit Beer Company. Oh, wait, no, none of those exist.
The ploy is obvious but entertaining, and it was good enough to get the beer to our shores. It probably won’t need much help in the marketing department either because it pretty much sells itself. What can tasting notes tell you that the name can’t?
The label is TTB approved, but some states don’t allow profanity on labels. We’ll see how many of those fall for the geographical claim.
