Bad Officiating

People have complained of bad officiating since the beginning of sports, I’m sure. But, it seems like in recent years that the game has seen a significant decline in the quality of the officiating, and it’s reared its ugly head this week. An egregious spot of a crucial 4th down play cost the Los Angeles Rams the game in their 24-17 loss to the Steelers on Sunday, and that’s just one of many inexplicably bad calls that have changed games.

Poor Quarterback Play

There are some great quarterbacks in the league like Patrick Mahomes, Tua Tagovailoa, Josh Allen, and others. But, as a whole, it seems like quarterback play has significantly declined in the past few years, and it’s noticeable this year. It’s not even that there are a lot of turnovers from the quarterback position, but there are too many guys unable or not trusted to throw the ball over the middle into tight windows. And, it’s made all but a few offenses pretty unwatchable.

Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce

Every NFL fan has an opinion on the couple, and they either love or hate the attention the world’s biggest pop star and the world’s best tight end are getting. Taylor Swift has been to four Chiefs games so far, with Kansas City winning all of them. And, the cameras are frequently showing her in the stands celebrating. Some fans love it, but same fans wish she would stay off their NFL broadcasts.

Thursday Night Football

The idea of Thursday Night Football on the surface is fine. But, how the NFL implements makes it an unwatchable product. Giving teams only three days of rest from their previous game on Sunday is ridiculous for a sport as physical as football that requires as much preparation as an NFL game does is dumb. And, it’s just a money grab by NFL Owners.

There’s a simple fix. Spread out bye weeks, and have Thursday Night Football played weeks 4-13, as well as opening night, with teams only coming off a bye week. They won’t do it, though. That would leave too much money on the table early and late in the season

The Pundit Discourse

Pundits like Stephen A. Smith, Skip Bayless, and Colin Cowherd make the overall NFL experience much worse for everyone. Football is an incredibly complicated game, and none of those guys are particularly knowledgeable about it. Yet, somehow, these are the guys that drive the conversation about the league’s teams and players, especially quarterbacks, and make the conversation incredibly toxic on social media and around the water cooler. Unfortunately, those guys are going to still get the most attention when it comes to firing off hot takes.
