We’re through 13 of the 16 days of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, and things are getting down to the nitty-gritty. In just a few days, all 300+ gold medals will have been awarded.

Unfortunately for these ten countries, they’re not winning as many medals as they should, based on population size and other factors. All medal totals are through August 8.

Traditionally, Germany is one of the best countries in the Summer Olympics. While They’re in the top-ten in the medal count in Paris, they’re 15 medals behind the total they won at Tokyo 2020. It has not been a strong Olympics for the Germans.

Mexico (128m) - 4 Medals (0G 2S 2B)

Mexico has never exactly been a power at the Summer Olympics, but this is a truly depressing performance. Unless something crazy happens, they’re set for their third straight Summer Olympics without a gold medal.

Spain (48m) 13 Medals (2G 3S 8B)

Spain has at least one more medal coming, as their Men’s Soccer team is in the finals, while the women’s team is in the Bronze Medal Match. But, for a country as big as Spain is, and an advantageous location in Western Europe, this is simply not good enough of a performance. They’re on track for their least medals since the eleven they earned at Sydney 2000.

India (1.4B) - 5 Medals (0G 1S 4B)

India is now the most populous country on Earth, which makes it utterly absurd that they have not won a single gold medal at Paris 2024. India eventually will rise up the Olympic Medal Table as the country continues to develop economically, but there’s no way to spin a country with 1.4 billion people not winning a single gold medal.

Japan (125m) - 33 Medals (13G 7S 13B)

It’s not as though Japan is having a terrible Paris Olympics, and regression from a host country is always normal. But, it’s been a ton of regression. Japan won 27 golds and 58 medals at Tokyo 2020. They’re not close to those numbers, and they’re on pace for their worst showing since Beijing 2008

South Africa (60m) - 4 Medals (1G 1S 2B)

When South Africa won 10 medals at Rio 2016, most thought it would be part of a larger trend of their ascendance on the Olympic Medal Table. But, it’s proved to be an aberration, with just 3 medals at Tokyo 2020 before another weak showing in Paris.

Colombia (52m) - 1 Medal (0G 1S 0B)

Colombia entered Paris 2024 having won at least five medals in the last three Summer Olympics, with 9 in London, 8 in Rio, and 5 in Tokyo. But, they sit at just one medal winner with only three days left, and that streak is going to come to an end.

Brazil (215m) - 15 Medals (2G 5S 8B)

Brazil has lost all momentum from hosting the 2016 Rio Olympics. Their two gold medals is on track to be their least since 2000, and their 15 medals would be the least since Athens 2004. Brazil is a country that should be winning more Olympic Medals, and simply isn’t.
