Head football coach Shame Beamer confirmed on Thursday night that wide receiver Ahmari Huggins-Bruce is no longer a member of the South Carolina football program. He is re-enrolled at the University of Louisville after leaving the program at the end of last season.
Meanwhile, his mother is firing back at Cardinals fans who don’t want him back!
Huggins, a former three-star recruit in the Class of 2021, had 34 offers out of high school. The South Carolina-native did not receive one from the Gamecocks and went to play in the ACC instead.
He finished third on the team in receptions as a freshman and sophomore. Huggins once again proved to be a big-play threat and reliable possession receiver for Louisville in 2023.
After playing in all 13 games for the Cardinals last season, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound pass-catcher hit the transfer portal.
Beamer gave him a call and brought him home. Huggins joined South Carolina for spring practice. He stuck around all the way through training camp.
However, things got weird when the local wide receiver missed practice on Tuesday and Wednesday. No further information was provided. The Gamecocks would not confirm whether he was still on the roster, which led to widespread speculation about his status with the team.
That changed on Thursday night.
[Ahmari Huggins-Bruce] is no longer a member of the team. I will have more to say about that. I just have to talk to our own team first. I talked to him literally as I was walking into the radio show tonight.
— Shane Beamer
Huggins then posted a farewell message to X on Friday morning.
Cardinal Authority also confirmed that he is re-enrolled at Louisville. He is back where he started less than 10 months ago. It is unclear as to whether Huggins retained his scholarship or walked on.
A lot of questions remain about what happened, but the bizarre saga has come to an end.
Unfortunately, not everybody in Kentucky is excited to have Huggins on the roster for a second time. Some Cardinals fans wonder whether the move will prove more detrimental than valuable.
Twyla Huggins-Bruce, the wide receiver’s mother, fired right back at the haters.
Louisville has yet to say anything about the return of Ahmari Huggins-Bruce but he is back on the team in some capacity. Only time will tell whether the decision to let him return was a good one.
