Star WNBA rookie Angel Reese is racking up rebounds at a historic pace. Earlier this week, she posted her third-straight 20-rebound game, and earlier this summer, she put together a streak of 15-straight games with a double-double.
But for as good as Angel Reese’s stats may look on paper, the conversation about her actual effectiveness as a basketball player has become another story, entirely.
The former LSU standout has been pretty widely criticized for her style of play, which will often see her put up multiple shots per possession, and catch her own rebounds, before eventually scoring.

It’s even turned into a meme on TikTok, with basketball players comedically recreating her haphazard style of play.

The suggestion that Reese’s rebound numbers aren’t as impressive as they might appear is further backed up by the fact that the 22-year-old forward is shooting 43.8% on shots within 5 feet of the basket, which is the worst percentage in the WNBA, as pointed out an NBA writer at SportingNews.

Despite some manufactured debate earlier this summer, Indiana Fever phenom Caitlin Clark as run away with the Rookie of the Year race, as her odds to win the award now hover around -5000, adding another chapter to the pair’s developing rivalry.
So far this season, Clark is averaging 17.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game, while Reese is averaging 13.6 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game.
The upcoming stars’ two teams also find themselves in similar positions in the WNBA standings as the Fever are the league’s 7th seed with a record of 14-16 (as of August 27), while the Sky are the 8th seed with a record of 11-18.
