This Auburn football season has been a total lost cause. Second-year head coach Bryan Harsin came in as a lame duck into the season, and a lame duck he was. Auburn got absolutely run off of their home field, 41-12, by Penn State in week three and are currently 3-6 on the season. They’re in the midst of a five-game winning streak. Harsin was finally, mercifully fired after their week 9 loss to Arkansas. The only reason he lasted that long is that Auburn did not have a permanent athletic director. But, they recently hired Mississippi State AD John Cohen to the same position.
So, with a school with as rabid and crazy of a fan base of Auburn, there are going to be plenty of coaching rumors. One big name that fits perfectly is Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin. But, who knows if Kiffin wants that job or wants to wait until Nick Saban retires at Alabama.
Now, there’s a new candidate reported to have mutual interest with Auburn
Oregon Coach Dan Lanning is reportedly interested
One year after Mario Cristobal left Oregon to go to Miami, could Dan Lanning do the same? Well, according to a report, that’s very possible.
REPORT: There’s mutual interest between #Auburn and Oregon coach Dan Lanning.

Well, well, well. This would be quite a shock. Lanning served as defensive coordinator at Georgia before taking over in Eugene, and the 36-year-old seems like he could be the next Kirby Smart. Lanning was also a graduate assistant under Nick Saban at Alabama.
This would be a massive get for Auburn, and an embarrassing situation for Oregon.
But, some people don’t buy the rumors.
Dan Lanning isn’t leaving Oregon for Auburn.
Not happening.
Whoever is reporting “mutual interest” hasn’t bothered to ask Lanning.
Enjoy your Sunday evening.

Look, is Dan Lanning to Auburn possible? Yes.
Is it probable? Likely not.
But I'd prefer to live in a world where he doesn't leave because it would force us to confront some narratives about CFB as a whole that I'd rather not talk about for a few more years.
