There has been a ton of confusion surrounding Tom Brady’s potential retirement today. First, Adam Schefter reported that Brady was officially going to retire. Then insiders refuted it. Then the Bucs refuted it. Finally, Tom Brady’s dad came out and said his son was not retiring.
It has made for a very odd day for anybody who is trying to keep track, but there may be one very straightforward reason why we can’t get a definitive answer. The reason is of course, money.
According to Sportrac, Tom Brady is due to receive the last $15 million of his signing bonus from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on February 4th.
FWIW: $15M of Tom Brady’s $20M signing bonus from last March is set to be paid out February 4th, 2022. Seems like something a guy or gal would want to have process before making any life changing career decisions official.

Like Sportrac says here, that seems like something that would make Brady not want to make an official announcement today even if he does plan to retire. $15 million seems like plenty of reason to wait just a few days if an announcement is coming.
This might not actually be the reason. Maybe Brady just hasn’t made his mind up yet. His season did just end last weekend. All I’m saying is that this seems like something that could easily explain why Brady wouldn’t want an announcement made today and why he wouldn’t have told the Bucs yet.
I guess we’ll find out for sure if we get an announcement from Tom Brady on February 5th that his football career is coming to an end.
