Bill Belichick made his college football debut at North Carolina on Labor Day. He looked absolutely miserable watching his team march down the field on its opening drive.

The Tar Heels took a quick lead over TCU in the first quarter. You wouldn’t have known it by their head coach’s reaction.

Belichick is known for his stoic personality. He shows little emotion. He’s often short with the media in pre- and postgame interviews.

He already seemed in midseason form while speaking to Holly Rowe. That mood continued as he made his way to the field for pregame.

Bill Belichick looked miserable after his team’s first drive.

The pregame images of the head coach provided a preview into what to expect after kickoff. His expression did not change, even with his team seeing immediate success.

North Carolina opened the game with a perfect possession. Quarterback Gio Lopez drove the offense 83 yards in seven plays, connecting on both of his passing attempts to total 58 yards.

The Tar Heels ran the ball five times for the other 25 yards and wound up in the endzone in four minutes’ time.

The atmosphere at Kenan Stadium was electric. UNC royalty was in the building headlined by Michael Jordan, Lawrence Taylor, and Julius Peppers.

The lid was ready to blow as a light show erupted following the opening touchdown. Bill Belichick was not impressed.

Belichick does not fit in college football.

The college level is just different than the NFL. There is a passion and excitement that surrounds each Saturday. The school pride, the fight songs, the tradition. Nothing beats it.

Yes, the NCAA is beginning to mirror the professional level in terms of player payment and free agency. Still, it’s not yet a job. Players are competing for the love of the game. Coaches thrive off it.

The excitement is often exuded on the sidelines from coaching staffs. Head coaches aren’t afraid to show emotion. In fact, they prefer it.

Teams respond positively to the energy of their leaders. The enthusiasm can provide a needed boost to an 18-year-old kid. It’s infectious!

There’s also the need to connect with players and families on the recruiting trail. Having a personality helps.

It’s not as necessary in the NFL. Players are playing for their livelihood. There’s a different motivation. There’s a different sense of professionalism.

Bill Belichick doesn’t seem to have grasped that concept given his reaction to the opening touchdown. Unfortunately, he wouldn’t have much more to cheer for after the first score.

TCU ripped off 41 straight points to take a commanding lead over the next two quarters.
