There are few players in the National Football League that seem to catch as much heat as Baker Mayfield does, whether it be from Cleveland Browns’ supporters, rival AFC North fanbases, and even neutrals. Maybe it’s because of all of those Progressive commercials he appears in.
Criticism of Mayfield was more intense than ever this year, as the Browns — who were expected by many to be Super Bowl contenders — finished the season with a below-average 8-9 record. The 26-year-old former #1 overall pick certainly didn’t have a great year, as he battled through nagging injuries to throw for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions during the 2021-22 season.
The Browns aren’t quite ready to give up on Baker, though, as both GM Andrew Berry and coach Kevin Stefanski — obviously hoping that Mayfield’s average play was a result of his injuries — confirmed during their NFL Combine press conferences that Mayfield will start for the Browns next season.
In addition to the front office, Mayfield also seems to have the support of his teammates, who have obviously bought into his toughness, at least based on this bizarre yet well-meaning (I think) quote from Browns’ fullback Andy Janovich.
“The thing about Baker is he won’t say shit to anyone about anything. You could cut his dick off and he wouldn’t fucking say shit… you would never know,” Janovich said in a recent interview with GoLong.
So, there you have it: Baker Mayfield — so tough he wouldn’t even complain about a severed dong.
