Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera has been one of the best bantamweight fighters in the UFC for a number of years.
He holds victories over stars such as Sean O’Malley, Frankie Edgar and Dominick Cruz.
But thus far, UFC gold has eluded the 30-year-old Ecuadorian star.
Vera most recently dropped a split decision to Cory Sandhagen in March that could well have landed him a shot at Aljamain Sterling’s title with a victory.
But he was given another shot to show just how much of a threat he is to Sterling’s title. Vera was set to take on former two-division champion Henry Cejudo at UFC 292 in August. Cejudo is coming off a split decision loss to Sterling in his return fight following a brief retirement.
The winner would very like have a shot at Sterling or Sean O’Malley, who will square off for the bantamweight title in the main event of the UFC 292 card.
But Cejudo was forced to pull out of the fight with Vera following a shoulder injury.
Some important news…
Unfortunately, I won't be able to compete on Aug 19 at UFC 292. I have a tear in my right shoulder that requires rehab.
I wish I could've got in there w/ Chito, but I won't be able to make a full recovery in time.@jimmybars

Vera was, understandably, not very happy with the news

“Well, f***,” he said simply in a Twitter video referencing the news.
But as they say, it’s hard to keep a good man down. And Vera is already working on finding a replacement opponent for Cejudo.
He’s since called out former bantamweight champion Petr Yan on Twitter.
Yan step up

Yan won the vacant title following Cejudo’s retirement with TKO of Jose Aldo at UFC 251 in July of 2020. Many believed he’d reign over the division for a long time. But he lost his belt in his first defense after an illegal knee in the fifth round of a fight against Sterling that he’d been dominating.
He then beat Cory Sandhagen in a No. 1 contender fight, but lost a split decision to Sterling in the rematch. Yan has since dropped to decisions to O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili.
But Vera doesn’t seem fazed by that and, personally, it’s a fight we’d love to see.
