It didn’t take the Carolina Panthers very long to start their rebuild after firing Matt Rhule. Early this week, they traded Robbie Anderson to the Arizona Cardinals after their interim head coach had kicked him out of last week’s game. Last night, they pulled the trigger on the blockbuster trade everybody had been waiting for.
The Panthers sent Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a haul of draft picks.
The move puts McCaffrey on a team that appears playoff bound for the first time since his rookie season and adds another dangerous weapon to a 49ers offense that has had a few rough weeks this season.
He should also put an end to the Kyle Shanahan tradition of using a committee at running back and crush the hopes of anybody who thought the return of Elijah Mitchell would save their fantasy season.

Betting odds on the San Francisco 49ers have already begun to reflect the magnitude of the move today. The 49ers’ odds to win their division, the NFC, and the Super Bowl.

Oddsmakers also seem to think the move will help McCaffrey’s efforts to win a little bit of individual hardware. His MVP odds have come down from +20000 to +9000.

It’s probably still not a great bet as a running back hasn’t won the award since Adrian Peterson did in 2012 and McCaffrey hasn’t put up any MVP-caliber stats this season. He’s even currently behind new teammate Jeff Wilson in rushing yards for the season.
