Connor McDavid Did What No NHL Player Has Done Since Wayne Gretzky During Unreal Season

In 2015, the Edmonton Oilers selected Connor McDavid with the first overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft (which marked the fourth time the team had “earned” the enviable but nonetheless dubious top spot in six seasons).

McDavid ultimately missed half of his rookie season after fracturing his shoulder 13 games into his inaugural campaign, but he managed to bounce back and quickly prove he was not only capable of living up to the lofty expectations surrounding him but surpassing them with stunning ease.

McDavid was named the captain of the Oilers ahead of his sophomore season, and there’s a reason he’s earned the nickname “McJesus” when you take a look at what he’s been able to achieve since then.

His blistering speed, stellar agility, effortless stick-handling, and deadly shooting ability have made him a six-time All-Star, four-time Art Ross Trophy Award winner, and two-time Hart Trophy winner, and he’ll soon add the Rocket Richard award to his impressive collection of hardware after leading the league in goals this season.

It goes without saying that McDavid is really, really, really, ridiculously good at hockey—and one stat sums up just how dominant he is thanks to a recent achievement that no other NHL player has been able to claim since a decade before he was born.

The NHL’s regular season officially wraps up on Friday night, but the Oilers (who will be facing off against the Kings in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs) capped things off on Thursday.

When everything was said and done, McDavid led the league in goals (64), assists (89), and overall points (153), which makes him the first player to do that since some guy named Wayne Gretzky, who did the same in his second-to-last season with the Oilers.

I don’t think anyone needed any more proof McDavid is a generational star, but if you did, you have some now.
