Dak Prescott and the Cowboys have not been able to work out any sort of long-term deal as the former fourth-round pick will play under the franchise tag this upcoming season. Prescott will take home just under $29 million this year, but as it stands now, following the 2020 campaign he will be an unrestricted free agent.
That isn’t a situation Dallas or Prescott necessarily want to find themselves in, but very well could if the Cowboys don’t offer up the contract the former Mississippi State quarterback thinks he deserves.
With the two parties still split on negotiations, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell thought up quite the hypothetical involving Dallas actually trading Prescott before things get really ugly.
While Barnwell proposed hypothetical trades involving every first-round pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, none were as wild as this one involving Prescott. In fact, it’s so shocking that it may actually make sense for both teams involved.
The ESPN analyst proposed the Cowboys trade Prescott and the No. 17 overall pick to the Dolphins in exchange for the No. 5 and No. 82 overall picks. Dallas would, of course, select a quarterback with the fifth overall pick in the hypothetical scenario.
The Cowboys would be moving up here for one of the non-Burrow quarterbacks, with somebody such as Jordan Love stepping in as the immediate starter in what would become more of a run-first Cowboys offense. This trade values Prescott as something close to the 17th pick in a typical draft by the Jimmy Johnson chart. The Cowboys stuck the exclusive franchise tag on him because they didn’t want to run the risk of losing him for two first-round picks, but I suspect they feared that a team like the Patriots might steal him away for two picks in the late 20s.
When it comes to Miami’s side of the trade, acquiring Prescott would do nothing but speed up its re-building process. The Dolphins wouldn’t have a problem, at least according to Barnwell, of paying Prescott the type of money he wants plus they would still have three other first-round picks in their pocket (17, 18 and 26).
Again, this is totally a hypothetical scenario, but both franchises could really turn a new leaf if a trade like this actually did happen. Dallas would finally get the Prescott situation off its books and out of the mind of fans while starting a new chapter with either Justin Herbert, Justin Love or Tua Tagovailoa taking the reigns of the franchise.
Miami would finally have a proven quarterback under center, plus three other exciting names in the fold given the three other first-round picks it would use.
