Commanders head coach Dan Quinn realizes that he may have gone a bit too far while trying to pay homage to the team’s controversial past in his first practice with the team.

Back in 2020, the Washington football team decided to drop the Redskins name due to controversy, but fans have since tried to bring it back.

Last year, over 100k Washington fans signed a petition to bring the name back.

While the team’s new owner, Josh Harris, shut down the idea of changing the name again, newly signed head coach Dan Quinn gave some fans hope when he wore a Redskins-themed shirt.

After receiving backlash on social media, Quinn apologized to his team for being a distraction.

“I think one of the parts of me taking this job, I was excited to bridge the past and the present. What a cool privilege that is to do. I also recognize there’s a lot of layers to that. So, it was a great lesson for me. What I really hate is that any attention that would’ve been taken away from these rookies and this awesome crew. Nobody wants to do that.”
