The Boston Red Sox acquired catcher Danny Jansen from the Toronto Blue Jays this month as they looked to add production for the second half of the season.

In doing so, they’ve set him up for a chance at MLB history!

Jansen has the opportunity to become the first Major League player to both hit and catch in the same at-bat. Yes, he has a chance to suit up for both squads in the same game.

How? Let’s break it down!

The Blue Jays and Red Sox faced off earlier this season in a game that was eventually postponed due to weather. Jansen, then a member of Toronto, started at catcher in that contest.

Not only that, but he was at the plate with an 0-1 count in the second inning at the time the game was called.

A make-up date in late August has been scheduled, but of course, Jansen will be on the other side when the game resumes following the trade.

While Toronto would use a pinch hitter to finish Jansen’s plate appearance, there’s a possibility he could start behind the dish for the Red Sox in that reschedule. Should he be called upon, he’d be playing catcher – in his own at-bat!

A chance at history!

Danny Jansen has gotten off to a great start in Boston, going 2-3 in his debut vs. the Yankees. He’ll hope to provide quality depth behind starter Colton Wong following the team’s decision to DFA Reese McGuire.

With Toronto, the righty hit .212 with six homers and 18 RBIs. He’ll look to boost those numbers with the Red Sox in Fenway Park.

We’ll see if he makes history when the two teams go head-to-head on August 26th.
