Derek Jeter spoke with sports show host Colin Cowherd on Monday, appearing on The Herd to talk a little baseball. During that conversation, the former MLB shortstop had to put the host in his place.

Cowherd misspoke when reflecting on Jeter’s professional career, lumping him in the same era as Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. He tried to call Jeter old!

The topic of conversation centered on the upcoming All-Star Game with Cowherd singling out rookie phenom Paul Skenes. In just his first season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the righty’s been named the National League’s starter for this year’s Midsummer Classic.

Skenes has impressed this season with his velocity as he consistently blows hitters away with 100 MPH deliveries. For that reason, Cowherd referenced famed power pitcher Nolan Ryan – whom he believed Jeter faced during his professional career.

He was just a bit off.

Derek Jeter played 20 MLB seasons, all with the New York Yankees. His career started in 1996 when he won Rookie of the Year.

Nolan Ryan, who’s almost three decades older Jeter, made his Major League debut in 1966, though he did pitch through the 1993 season.

Derek Jeter immediately shut Colin Cowherd down.

“Paul Skenes, Pittsburgh Pirates, dominant guy,” Cowherd is heard saying. “Obviously, you were in the Nolan Ryan era…”

Before the host could continue, Jeter cut him off.

“No, no, no, no, no, no, noooo,” the shortstop replied. “I never faced Nolan. Slow down. Slooooow down. I was waaaay after Nolan.”

An emphatic correction.

Jeter didn’t like being lumped in with a player that played the majority of his career in the 60s, 70s, and 80s – and he let Cowherd know it!
