Sad Mets Fans React To Edwin Diaz Blowing Up His Knee So Badly He’ll Miss Entire 2023 Season

New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz — who signed a $102 million contract in the offseason after being widely deemed as the best closer in his sport — blew out his knee during the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday night and will miss the entirety of the 2023 season, according to reports.

While the loss of Diaz would be a blow for any team in the league, it’s particularly painful for Mets fans as their apparently promising seasons is, once again, cursed before it even begins (I *am* a Mets fan, by the way).

Needless to say, given the history of the New York Mets and their World Series aspirations of the season, the news of Diaz’s season-ending injury isn’t going over all too well with the notoriously spurned fanbase.

To make matters worse for Mets fans is that Diaz not only suffered the injury during the preseason, but he dids so while celebrating — not even actually PLAYING — in the World Baseball Classic.

Just a few months ago, Diaz signed a five-year, $102 million deal with the Mets, who have spent nearly $500 million on player contracts this offseason.

Even All-Star Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell, who is a longtime Mets fans, chimed in on Twitter:

Heading into the 2023 season and prior to the news of Diaz’s injury, the Mets were tied with the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers with odds of +800 to win next season’s World Series, which trails only the defending champion Houston Astros.

Given the commitment from owner Steve Cohen to deliver the organization its first World Series trophy since 1986, the Mets will likely be aggressive in trying to find a replacement closer for the upcoming season.
