Carson Wentz made headlines on Sunday for a late-game interception that ended the Commanders’ comeback attempt against the Titans.
Trailing 21-17 in the fourth quarter, Wentz successfully led his offense down the field on its final drive of regulation. After getting to the goal line, though, things went awry.
The passer narrowly missed throwing interceptions on his first- and second-down attempts before finally succeeding on third-down. The pick sealed the Commanders’ fate, sending Washington home with its fourth loss in five games.

It was actually a nice bounce-back game for Wentz, who threw for 359 yards and two scores. He’d struggled a bit his prior start vs. Dallas. Unfortunately, the final play is what folks will remember.
Wentz’s postgame comments on the errant pass didn’t make things better.
Fans clown Carson Wentz for response to interception
Wentz is now catching some flak for his response to that game-sealing interception. He said he thought he’d thrown a touchdown when the ball initially left his hand.
From NBC Sports Washington:
“The guy made a heck of a play. At least from my vantage point, it looked like he was covering Terry [McLaurin] a little bit on the crossing route. I just tried to squeeze it in there to J.D. … I thought we had six points when it left my hand. The result, that was unfortunate.”
Fans didn’t necessarily like hearing those comments as there were two defenders blanketing his intended receiver on that final play. Take a look at the reaction on social media.

One fan wrote, “six points for the defense?” Wentz’s pass was returned for 47 yards, though after a review, it was ruled that the interceptor was down by contact.
6 points for the defense?

One NFL viewer commented, “This should concern you if you’re a Commanders coach or fan,” while another fan posted, “There were three defenders around the receiver. It would’ve been a miracle for him to catch the ball.”

Tough ending to what was an otherwise stellar day from Wentz. He’ll try to land a second win in Washington next Sunday against the Bears.
