Jim Harbaugh is currently torn between two worlds. He is out on the recruiting trail for Michigan as national signing day approaches, but he is also reportedly interested in an NFL job. He is currently expected to interview for the Minnesota Vikings job, but we don’t yet what will come of that.
While the football world hasn’t been given a definitive answer on Harbaugh’s future, it seems he gave a 5-star recruit a pretty clear idea of his plans. That 5-star recruit was Will Johnson. His father, Deon Johnson, told The Detroit News about Johnson’s interaction with Harbaugh.
“He told William he was definitely looking, and if an opportunity came up, he was probably going to take it. (Harbaugh) told him he felt the team was gonna be good, they’re gonna win a lot of ballgames, they’re gonna do a lot of good things. But he wants to chase a Super Bowl. That’s one of the things on his list is to be a Super Bowl-winning coach.”
That sounds like a pretty resounding “I’m going back to the NFL if I get the chance.” It also just so happens that the Minnesota Vikings could be just the team that would interest him in a return to the league.
They are absolutely loaded with weapons around Kirk Cousins. Their defense needs some fixing, but Harbaugh might believe he is the man for that specific job. He put together some really strong defenses during his first stint in the NFL.
Of the available jobs in the NFL, the Vikings are probably the second best option for Harbaugh to try and win a Super Bowl quickly. The only available job that offers the same kind of quick upside (assuming Josh McDaniels actually is the next Raiders coach) is the Miami Dolphins.
It remains to be seen where Jim Harbaugh will be coaching next year, but it sure sounds like his plan is a return to the NFL.
