Based on my experience, it’s pretty hard to have a bad time when you attend a professional golf tournament in person.
Those outings typically revolve around spending the day in the sun while throwing back some adult beverages and roaming an impeccably manicured course while watching some of the best golfers on the planet make a wildly difficult game look shockingly easy.
With that said, I might have a different opinion if I got clocked with a golf ball at some point during an event.
When you consider the caliber of play on display at a tournament, you usually don’t have to be too worried about finding yourself in the path of an errant shot. However, the people who participate are only human, so it’s usually a good idea to keep your head on a swivel and be prepared to react if you hear someone scream “FORE!” after ripping a shot.
Unfortunately, there’s only so much you can do to avoid getting drilled by a hard projectile traveling in excess of 100 MPH.
One fan who headed to Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY ahead of the PGA Championship learned that the hard way thanks to what unfolded while Joel Dahmen was making his way around the tract during a practice round on Wednesday.
Dahmen got off to a bit of a rough start on the front nine, as his drive made its way into the gallery before coming to a stop after colliding with the calf of the unfortunate soul who was unable to get out of the way in time.
Caleb McGuire (the victim in question) shared a picture of the damage on Twitter as well as a couple of photos he snapped with Dahmen, who not only apologized but handed him a $100 bill to cover his beer tab for the day (based on what we know, the golfer knows how to appreciate a cold one).
I’ll take that over a signed glove any day of the week.
