Johanna Duplantis Reaches NCAA Championship On Walk-Off Pole Vault To Continue Family Legacy

Johanna Duplantis is the latest member of the Duplantis family to qualify for the NCAA track and field championships in pole vault. It was her last opportunity to do so at LSU and she did it in walk-off fashion.

The Lafayette-native will compete for a national title!

Johanna has track and field in her blood. Literally. Greg Duplantis, the patriarch, was a four-time letter winner for the Tigers and qualified four times for the U.S. Olympic Trials. His wife, Helena, was a two-sport athlete at LSU in hepathlon and volleyball. Their eldest son, Andreas, was one of the most prolific high school pole vaulters in Louisiana history and qualified for the NCAA Championships at his parents’ alma mater. Their youngest son, Mondo, is considered to be the greatest pole vaulter of all-time. He consistently breaks his own world record in the event, which made him extremely wealthy.

Antoine Duplantis, the third son, bucked the family trend. He did not gravitate toward pole vault. But he did play college baseball for the Tigers and reached the College World Series as the school’s all-time hits leader. No big deal.

That leads us to Johanna Duplantis.

The 5-foot-7 senior is the youngest of the four Duplantis children. That should not discredit her greatness!

Johanna Duplantis could move up the family leaderboard next month. She cleared her final attempt at 4.24 meters (13-11) at the NCAA East Regional this weekend to punch her ticket to Eugene for the first time in her career. In doing so, she became the fourth member of her family to qualify for the NCAA Championships with her dad and two brothers. That’s crazy.

Although Johanna Duplantis’ career is not quite as decorated as Mondo, she was a three-time state champion in high school and owns one of the top-five vaults in LSU history in both indoor and outdoor. Now she has the opportunity to do what only Mondo could do and bring a trophy back to Baton Rouge!
