Our hearts go out to the Sperbeck and Elway families after Jeff Sperbeck, John Elway’s longtime friend and agent, has passed away due to injuries sustained from a golf cart accident. According to TMZ Sports, John Elway was driving the golf cart at the time of the accident.

Reports say that Sperbeck sustained traumatic brain injury (TBI) following the golf cart accident with John Elway over the weekend and he was consequently placed on life support.

The crash occurred on Saturday night while John Elway and Jeff Sperbeck, their wives, and John’s son were leaving a Stagecoach music festival party around 7pm. Sperfeck is said to have fallen off the back of the golf cart and hit his head on the ground.

After being taken to a nearby hospital following the injury, he was placed on life support but lost his life at 1:10am this morning. There has since been an investigation launched into the accident after police did not initially respond to the scene as all of the available officers were working at the nearby Stagecoach Festival, according to TMZ Sports.

While most of the sports world is not familiar with Jeff Sperbeck, he has been John Elway’s agent for years, they were partners together in a winery, and said to be best friends. This John Elway golf cart accident really is tragic and while this story might seem out of place on BroBible I felt it prudent to cover primarily as a reminder of how dangerous golf carts can be when not operated safely.

And I am not talking about golf carts on golf courses, though injuries occur daily on courses across the nation. But my friends and family in the medical field have shown me the most disturbing images of injuries they’ve treated from people hanging legs or arms out of golf carts. So much so that my own golf cart has sat unused in my garage for the past 2 years because they are so wildly unsafe outside of golf course settings that I don’t want to expose my family to the dangers…

And I’ll happily hop in a side-by-side and go off-roading or jump on a dirt bike or 4-wheeler and get after it. With the former, there are seat belts and roll bars. With the latter you are prepared for all-terrain. Golf carts lull you into a sense of safety and NOBODY wears the seat belts. Talk to an ER orthopedics doctor about how they feel about golf carts and you’ll understand where I’m coming from here.
