Earlier today, the Indianapolis Colts revealed New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels would be joining the team as their new head coach just one day after the Detroit Lions announced former Pats defensive coordinator Matt Patricia will be heading their squad next year. The Colts and McDaniels had technically only come to terms on a contract when the celebratory tweet was sent out, but everyone knows that’s just a technicality… except when it isn’t.
According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McDaniels apparently had a change of heart sometimes this afternoon and will be turning down the Colts’ offer in order to remain in New England.
Stunner: Patriots’ OC Josh McDaniels has decided NOT to accept Colts’ HC job and will remain with New England, sources told ESPN.

As a meme sommelier, I would strongly recommend you pair the following picture with the sound of a sad trombone.
Schefter went into further detail in a more in-depth article, saying Patriots owner Robert Kraft decided McDaniels might still have some value in the wake of the Super Bowl (where the OC’s attempts to help the team take home another championship were derailed when Patricia blatantly ignored The Patriots Way by failing to do his fucking job).
While some people are speculating his return might have something to do with Bill Belichick’s future with the team, all signs point to the status quo remaining the same for now.
I can’t help but be reminded of the episode of It’s Always Sunny where the gang gets embroiled in a bunch of high school drama during prom season when Tammy (the Josh McDaniels in this situation) decides to leave her popular jock boyfriend Trey (the Patriots) for a comparatively underwhelming alternative in the form of Dennis (the Colts) before changing her mind.
